10 Days!

It's been 10 days since I posted. Last weekend was fall break so me and my roommate, Adam, drove up to Boston for the weekend. Boston is a pain to navigate, and the recently released Google Maps for Palm OS was a real time saver — when I got cell phone service. It's astonishing how such Cingular doesn't provide adequate service in such a large metropolitan area. I get great service anywhere else I've been but Boston seems to be a black hole of Cingular coverage.

A bunch of things just bunched up on this short week, including a reaction paper to Fred Brooks' The Mythical Man-Month (which coincided almost perfectly with 37signals' release of a free online version of their software development book, Getting Real). and a bunch of group meetings. I've been re-inspired by Marc Canter's post on "the amount of automation, modernization and catch-up that the health and medical professions require," as it relates to one of my group projects related to his conclusion (which I won't disclose publicly in case we decide to take it further than just a pedagogical exercise).

ENGL 105: Copyright and Culture

The class I am currently sitting in has a list of recommended blogs on the syllabus. We just watched a video podcast. Cool!

Checking In

Posting from inside T.S. Ernesto. It's not quite as bad as the news was reporting (and as I expected), but we prepared everything just to be safe. I was here during Katrina which was stronger than Ernesto and we only lost power for less than 24 hours, but the Category 3 Wilma was the last one to hit Florida and that was in everyone's minds.

As expected, my 10am flight tomorrow was canceled but I managed to get onto a 1:40pm flight to get me in to Philadelphia at 4:20pm.

A Message From God

No, this isn't a religious post, it's just part of a funny conversation I had with my sister earlier today:

Me: Did your internet just go down?
Her: Yeah. Whenever that happens I think it's a message from God to get off the computer and do my homework.
Me: Well what am I supposed to do? … Oh wait, it's back.
Her: Guess he wanted you to have it again.

Exit PowerBook, Enter MacBook

I posted my PowerBook G4 on Craig's List on Thursday and it just walked out the door less than half an hour ago. Craig's List is simply amazing. In comparison, doing this on eBay would have cost me more (greater than $0) and I would have had to worry about shipping. One does have to be careful, though, as I did get a bunch of replies to the ad that were clearly scams (e.g., "I will pay you $1000 and you send me the change", "This is for my son in Afrika[sic]", etc).

With my PowerBook gone, I picked up a MacBook yesterday. I went with the white 2GHz model and picked up a 4GB nano and printer as well. The nano got promptly placed on Craig's List and the printer will be free after mail-in rebate. If anyone wants to buy it, drop me an email using the contact form at the top of the page. While it did hurt to spend $1500 yesterday, once the nano sells and I collect on all the rebates, the entire upgrade will have cost me less than $250.

For the little I've played with it, the keyboard on the MacBook (and the PowerBook as well) is miles above the desktop Apple Keyboard. I can type much faster on it and the keys don't get stuck like they do on the desktop keyboard. The MacBook was assembled in Week 30, so that puts it at about 2 weeks old. While I certainly haven't done anything intensive on it (just web browsing and iTunes), CoreDuoTemp reports that the machine is running at 22-26°C (with the processor at 1.5-1.67GHz). From that base, I can't imagine it getting much higher than 50-60°C, but I'll only be able to tell once I do use it a lot. I tried it out on my bare lap just to see how it felt and it was fine. A bit warm in the back-left corner (near the MagSafe), but definitely usable and definitely cooler than my PowerBook doing the same things (which I've clocked at around 50-60°C in the past).

Take everything I said about the energy during night 1 and flip it upside. The band was definitely on fire tonight and didn't really want to stop between songs, as showcased by the unusual segues present. If I Had It All made its return tonight with an extended jam reminiscent of the Dreamgirl jam (yes, that's a good thing). Just as the band finished an explosive Dancing Nancies > Warehouse duo, the band segues into Typical Situation AND then tops that off with Tripping Billies in what can only be described as a 40 minute giant ball of energy. I also noticed there was no pause between Everyday and Stay, something the official setlist doesn't reflect but that just added to the electric atmosphere on stage.

The band switched up American Baby Intro and Rapunzel in the encore for Two Step in response to crowd chants for it. I was a bit upset during the show because I thought the band had foregone Shotgun and Kill The King in favor of Two Step. After seeing what was on the original setlist, I would have been fine either way.

I am sad that I didn't get to hear Shotgun or Kill The King, but the band's solid performance more than made up for it. It should also be noted that this was the first two-night stand since 2003 that no songs have been repeated, something that was bound to happen sometime this tour since last year was an album year and the year before that had the four new songs being played every night.

The band now takes a strange break from the east coast for a two-night stand at Alpine in Wisconsin before coming back to Virginia Beach on Independence Day.

This was my first show of the summer and 11th all-time DMB show. I saw seven songs I'd never seen live before (Pig, Proudest Monkey, So Right, Break Free, The Idea Of You, Sister and Dreaming Tree). All in all this was a pretty standard show for this tour. Nothing spectacular came out of the setlist and the song performances, while energetic were nothing I haven't heard this tour. The show met my expectations but nothing wowed me like Hello Again on 7/29/04 did, for example. This is not to say I didn't enjoy the show, on the contrary, I had a lot of fun and I'm glad the weather held up for the most part (a few sprinkles here and there). It was also pretty cool to hear some people singing along to Break Free and The Idea Of You. I hope that we may have done a little something to make that happen :)

I'm really looking forward to tonight, where the band will most likely pull out Shotgun, Can't Stop and Kill The King and old favorite JTR.

Internet Is Here

The ISP finally felt bad for me and sent the technician out. Monday and Tuesday, the guy couldn't make it out. There was an outage at some building on Friday and that was more important than me being without internet for two weeks. Yesterday, he came but the key the leasing office gave him didn't work. I come home today and there are new modems here but the link light is still blinking. Luckily I came home early today because of training and was able to catch him before he went home. He spent an hour and a half hooking up wires in the basement before the "link" light on the modem stayed on. DSLReports speed test pegs me at under 250 kbps down and 370kbps up, which should barely be considered broadband. Normal web surfing is fine but I can see my DMB concerts taking forever to download. Right now, I'm just happy to be back online. The bitching will recommence once I become disappointed with the speeds (which will be soon).

No Internet

Internet access is included with our new apartment. It is provided by a company called Hotwire which may or may not be owned by University City Housing. The landlord delivered our DSL modems (one a person) last Thursday but the ISP physically cut off access to the apartment because the previous tenants moved out. I made an appointment for the technician to come out today between 1 and 5 to reactivate service to the apartment in a box in the basement. I come home today and notice that the modem I had installed in my room hadn't moved an inch and that the "Line" light was still blinking.

I wait on hold for 20 minutes to speak to a rep that tells me that the tech got backed up and couldn't make it out. I learned that if the tech gets one job done or all his jobs done, he still goes home at 5. After asking to be placed at the top of the list, I also learn that the tech does things in whatever order he wants. I asked the rep point blank, "So it could be that I never get internet access if the rep keeps 'not getting around to me in time'?" And he answers, "Well, yes in theory that is could be true." After a bit more back and forth (I was really trying to restrain my emotions since I knew it wasn't the reps fault and there was very little that could be accomplished), I gave up and came to the fraternity house to do my interneting. Hopefully tomorrow I can sit in the comfort of my own room and regain my connection to the world.
