Saw these come across my RSS reader today and just had to share.
“Whenever there is a hard job to be done I assign it to a lazy man; he is sure to find an easy way of doing it.” -Walter Chrysler

I personally prefer being called "selective" instead of "lazy", but I don't feel like justifying that just now ;-)
When a new Mac Pro that Apple advertises as “the fastest Mac ever” doesn’t make the cut for the Macworld Expo keynote, even the more jaded among us start salivating.

I couldn't have said better myself. I'm not as big a rumor monger as I used to be (you could say I'm too "selective" to keep up with the 95% of pure speculation that exists out there), but Justin sure nailed it. The new Mac Pro is simply awesome, but I doubt I would ever buy one because I don't need it. For most people, these are just nice to look at and dream of owning for no good reason. That said, Apple has trumped CES for the second year in a row. Last year it was the iPhone at the keynote and this year it was a stealth update to the Mac Pro. Does this say more about Apple's Reality Distortion Field or about the sorry state of consumer electronics? Is a high-end workstation really more exciting than pretty much everything at CES? The fanboy in me wants to say the latter but I really think it's the former. In any case, I think Gizmodo has the right idea: these Mac Pros are just the tip of the iceberg.

Signs suggesting that iPhone hype has reached atmospheric levels:
Signs that it still hasn't peaked:
- No one is lining up yet.
- There aren't any on eBay yet.

I noticed a bunch of referrer links coming in from several Personal Megite pages, no doubt due to my comment on Scoble's latest Origami post.
While I do appreciate the page hits, and I probably shouldn't complain, I have yet to post the word "origami" anywhere on this site and so that means Megite is broken. From what I can tell from Megite's confusing font-size-based hierarchical layout, only about half the links under "Related Items" are actually about Origami and the rest are simply links to the blogs people "claimed" on Robert's post's comments. There's even a link to Myspace in there. It seems even Rupert Murdoch is trying to figure out what lies and what doesn't lie in Origami's path of death and destruction.
Of course if that didn't get me on Megite for Origami, ranting about a link on Megite relating to Origami sure will.

Everyone in the media was hyping up about the Sun/Google press conference that was held two days ago. People were talking about an online Office or the unveiling of a WebOS, with the purpose to destroy Microsoft one JavaScript and AdSense ad unit at a time. Instead what do we get? News that the Java Runtime Environment is being packaged with the Google Toolbar. How exciting! Was a press conference and live webcast really necessary to announce all of this? Sure "they look forward to working together in the future," but why not save all that hype-juice for when it is time to announce Google StarOffice?
Hot off the heels of that lackluster announcements, Apple announces they are holding a "One more thing…" event on October 12. For those not familiar with "One more thing…", it's Steve Job's trademark phrase for that bombshell he drops during the last few minutes of a keynote, right about the time he's half-expected to close up the keynote with boring marketshare numbers and vague forward-looking statements. Anyway, speculation immediately started on whether this is an event for the long-rumored video iPod and mockups immediately started sprouting all over the place.
ThinkSecret, an Apple rumor site with a decent success rate, posted an article stating that the event's purpose is to announce new PowerMacs and PowerBooks. The question is, why would Steve go out of his way to invite the media to an event showcasing already obsolete incremental upgrades to machines on a dying platform? I personally think he wouldn't. On the other hand, the nano has a profit margin of about $100, so Apple may not want to cannibalize nano sales just yet (but would a video iPod and the nano have the same target market anyway?). This event also falls just a day after Apple's earnings call, so this would be a great way to kickoff a new quarter. As such, I'm expecting nothing short of a new iPod (video or not) to be announced at this special event, but if the event does turn out to just be the announcement of new PowerMacs and PowerBooks, both me and the markets will be sorely disappointed.
