Flickr thumbnails on del.icio.us

Flickr thumbnails now show up on del.icio.us

Originally uploaded by Martin Gordon.

I just stumbled across a thumbnail on the del.icio.us popular list and discovered that bookmarking a photo page on Flickr shows the thumbnail in del.icio.us. I tried it myself with one of my own pictures and it worked just as well. Now all we need is for del.icio.us to read the caption/tags off of Flickr and apply them as del.icio.us tags.

Yay for two of Yahoo!'s acquisitions playing nice with each other!

Penn Library does social bookmarking

I saw a link to this in my referrer logs…

PennTags is the University of Pennsylvania Library's social bookmarking tool. I haven't added anything yet, but at first glance, it looks a lot like del.icio.us.

It has a feature called projects, which are basically folders for those who aren't folsonomified yet. There also all the goodies you'd expect from commercial social bookmarking sites, such as RSS feeds for everything, bookmarklets and even a Firefox toolbar (for bookmarking and other library tools).

This is the first I've heard of this, but a quick Google search reveals that this is at least 4 months old. I'll be the first to admit I don't spend much time at the libary (Whartonites are averse to any text not in Excel), but this is the first I've heard of it so they haven't done a good job of advertising it.

Yahoo! buys del.icio.us

According to Joshua himself, Yahoo is now the proud owner of his social bookmarking site, del.icio.us. Yahoo is really getting serious in their Web 2.0 march by adding del.icio.us to their stable and finally reuniting del.icio.us with its long lost tagging half-brother, Flickr.

So with all these small startups popping up and some even receiving VC funding, it may seem at first like we're going through another bubble. Taking it a step further, however, we see that these companies aren't IPOing every day of the week. Investors have become a lot more cautious about what they throw money at. As a result, I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of these types of deals going through. What you'll find is that these Web 1.0 companies that have already survived the bubble will snap up the small Web 2.0 houses. Not only do big guys have more at stake, thereby being more cautious in their acquisitions, they are on much stabler footing and can afford to take a loss if things don't pan out.

This is how we're going to find out who the winners are and who the losers are in this round of startups. The winners will get acquired by the big boys who have already survived a bubble and the losers will be left out in the cold.

Just wanted to share this great news. Congrats to Josh and everyone else at del.icio.us!

More Tag-based Organization

I've added a weighted categories plugin that formats the categories in the sidebar a bit better than the simple categories list Wordpress comes with by default.

I was a bit skeptical about using tags on this blog because I didn't like that long list of categories, but I'm satisfied with this implementation of tags. The circle is now complete.

Tag-based Organization

I've just installed Jeff Minard's modification of Edmundo Hidalgo's Cat2Tag plugin for WordPress to move away from the antiquated categorical organization system to a more flexible tag-based system. I've already been pseudo-tagging my posts using categories in the sense that I've been putting posts in more than one category, but I've been sticking to existing categories since I couldn't previously create categories on-the-fly while writing posts.

As the description for this plugin says, "It’s time to use folksomonies in our blogs, people."

Now if only there was a way to integrate the Technorati tagging plugin with this plugin…
